Many people believe that they have a right to live their lives the way they want to and that it is nobody else’s business. Deuteronomy 5:9-10 9 Thou shalt not bow down thyself unto them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me, 10 And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me and keep my commandments.
The Bible is talking about serving idols, other “gods” and not the one true God. The Bible, in both the Old and New Testaments, tell us what pleases God and good patterns of life we should follow. The Bible tells us in Deuteronomy 28 the blessings and the curses according to our “choices”. He gives us freewill to choose and allows us to do what we want, but we don’t get to choose the consequences of our actions.
Generational curses are formed by choices made and then the devil will use them to trap us and try to destroy our families.
What we don’t think about is how our choices can become generational curses that affect our families. Even in the Bible, if you study the kings of Israel, Saul was the 1st king, yet he didn’t give his whole heart to God and he ended up being responsible for his son, Jonathan’s death. He lost the kingdom because of his wickedness and he and his son died in battle. Jonathan was not like his father, yet his life was affected by his father’s choices.
King David was known as a man after God’s own heart. He messed up by having an affair with Bathsheba, and having her husband killed, under disguise of battle. Even though David repented he was told by God in 2 Samuel 12:10 “Now therefore the sword shall never depart from thine house; because thou hast despised me, and hast taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be thy wife.” David had a son that raped one of David’s daughters. That son was killed by one of his brothers. And then that brother tried to take the kingdom from David.
What about in your life? Do you have ancestors who have made choices that are still affecting your life and that of your family? Or maybe it was choices made by you. Whether abuse, addictions, sexual perversion, low self-esteem, poverty, or whatever it may be, that choice seems to be destroying your life and that of those around you.
Your life is not your own. We were created and called by a God who sent His Son to die on a Cross for us. Serving Him is not a chore. It isn’t a list of do’s and don’ts. We do have the ability to choose to do what we want. The Bible shows us a way we should live. It tells us the consequences of our choices. We can’t blame God if our life is a mess. Bad things are still going to happen in this broken, sin-filled world, and some of those bad things were caused by choices made by yourself or others.
We have hope. If we choose to give it all to Jesus, we can stop those generational curses in our families. We can overcome those addictions, and the abuse and anything else that is causing so much hurt and anguish in our lives and in those around us. Matthew 16:19 “And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.”
Keys are what we use to lock or unlock a door, whether we want in or need out. The keys of the kingdom of heaven, lock or unlock for us what is needed for our freedom from those generational curses or choices we have made ourselves. The enemy has to loosen us from his grip. We can restrict, stop or hinder his attacks with the right weapons. Those weapons are given to us from the One who died and was resurrected to give us life. According to John 10:10 The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.
We are free to choose. I’ve seen the destruction caused in my own family because of generational curses, choices made by my ancestors and even my own. I’m also seeing the blessings that have come into my life because of being right with God. He has, and continues to free me from those curses, as I continue to go deeper with Him and choose His ways. You can too, in Jesus Name. Amen!
