How the Body Remembers Trauma

We can pretend that our past wounds don’t affect us. We can try to push down emotions and feelings and ignore them, but our body keeps score. That anger will erupt without warning. We are easily frustrated. We get overwhelmed at things that shouldn’t bother us.

Jesus can and will take us through the healing process if we will let Him. Yes, we have to relive those traumatic memories. However, if we stick with it and push through, we can live life without being traumatized by it.

2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

It isn’t easy. It is not a quick fix. Jesus isn’t a fairy godmother. It is a process that takes time. The more trauma, the more time it will take. God will go at a pace that our minds can handle. Facing memories that have tried to destroy us is possible with Jesus. I’ve gone through this. It took a lot longer than it should have because I spent hours trying to disconnect. Watching TV, shopping, playing video games…there is a myriad of ways that we try to ignore the pain.

But if we don’t deal with this, we will take our anger and pain out on others. They aren’t the ones who initially hurt us. We have a choice. We can go through the process and be set free, or we can live in our pain for the rest of our lives.
