Isaiah 53:4-5: 4 Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. 5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.
I was reading this and started thinking about what this really meant. This is all You, Jesus, did for us; this is why You did it, so we could have…You “borne”, lifted, carried and took our griefs, our sickness.
You carried, You bore our load, made yourself a burden carrying our sorrows, our pain, physical and mental.
You were wounded, profaned, defiled, polluted, desecrated, made common, violated, dishonored, treated as common, bore through, pierced, wounded for our transgressions and rebellion. Jesus was fatally wounded for us.
You were bruised crushed, broken for our iniquities, perversity, depravity
You were chastised, disciplined, corrected so we could have peace, completeness, soundness, welfare, safety, health, prosperity, quiet, tranquility, contentment, friendships of human relationships and especially a covenant relationship with you
You were given stripes, bruised, wounded so we could be healed of you, of men, of hurts of nations, involving restored favour, of individual distresses
So to break this down: Vs. 4. You bore, (or took upon Yourself) our griefs, (our sicknesses), and our sorrows, (our physical and mental pain) We considered You to be stricken, (defeated), smitten, (wounded and beaten), and afflicted (to be put down, become low, humbled, humiliated).
Vs. 5. You was wounded (profaned, defiled, polluted, desecrated, made common) for our transgressions (sins), You were bruised (crushed, shattered, made contrite) for our iniquities (perversity, depravity, iniquity, guilt): the chastisement (discipline, correction) of our peace (completeness, soundness, welfare), was upon him; and with his stripes (bruises, wounds) we are healed (made healthful, of personal distress).
This should show us without a shadow of a doubt, that God loves us. He sent His Son to die for us, to give us salvation, healing, and so much more!
